How to Market a Small Business for Free

Did you know there are ways to market your small business without spending money? The internet and social media have made it easier to get the word out about your brand. Whether you have a physical brick and mortar location, or you operate solely online, there are different tactics you can leverage to promote your product or service for free.

This form of marketing is often referred to as “organic” marketing, as opposed to paid marketing. I am sharing three ways any small business could market organically online. If this post is interesting, let me know! I would love to share more ways for specific types of businesses to engage in organic marketing.

  1. Create and Operate Active Social Media Profiles

Create social media profiles and use them to talk about your product or service. Use your authentic brand voice, be transparent, and communicate clearly about how people can purchase from you. The key is to streamline the buying process for your customers. You can do this by making the buying process very clear and easy to follow. This will depend on your business, but might include direct links to your sales page or a clear call to action to schedule an appointment with you.

Social media platforms to consider: Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, TikTok, Twitter. What else would you add to this list?

2. Create Attractive Profiles on Free Review Platforms

Make a free profile on Google My Business, Yelp and TripAdvisor. Do an online search of your business and see if there are lesser-known review sites you are popping up on. Create profiles there too, no matter how small. This way you control the conversation about your brand, where ever it is happening online. You might find local directories that mention your business. Whenever possible, create clear links back to your business so customers can find you and get in touch directly.

Free Review Platforms: Google My Business (more of a directory but also has reviews), Yelp, TripAdvisor, Bring Fido, local review platforms in your area.

3. Send an Article Idea to Your Local Newspapers

Is there something exciting happening with your business? Perhaps you are expanding your building, providing a new service, or having a charity event. You can contact local news anchors and pitch the story. You can also contact magazines and local newsletter writers and bloggers that might be interested in a fun story. This one is a little more random but I’ve seen it work and it doesn’t cost anything to put yourself out there.

Was this list helpful? What organic marketing tactics have worked well for your business?
